Medical Support for Most Vulnerable Children with Rare Diseases from Ukraine

Today, Birds for Sofia is intensifying its efforts to support Ukrainian children with rare genetic conditions who are caught in the ongoing devastation of Vladimir Putin’s war — a war that has turned hospitals into targets and left many families without access to essential care. Meanwhile, most kids with rare diseases need life-supporting items around the clock. With no outside help, they have a high risk of irreversible complications to their health.

Our Medical Support Program focuses on delivering urgent, often life-sustaining support to children living with spinal muscular atrophy, tuberous sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, Angelman syndrome, Pompe disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, West syndrome, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome, Osteogenesis imperfecta, and other genetic disorders.

Since February 2022 we have sent our help to 548 Ukrainian families and covered their crucial medical needs worth $849,020.

Here is what we provide:

1. most needed medical supplies and medications,
2. portable noninvasive ventilators, oxygen concentrators and inhalers,
3. sitters, wheelchairs, and home training devices,
4. rehabilitation classes and intensive courses,
5. personal grants to families in need to spend on medical expenses locally.
