Daryna Samoilenko
For children with rare diseases, every step forward is a victory. Last year, Daryna received Zolgensma at UC Davis in Sacramento as a U4U parolee and participant of our USA Resettlement Program for refugees with rare diseases from Ukraine. This life-changing therapy offers hope for kids with SMA, but the battle never stops there.
Recently, the Samoilenko family moved to Los Angeles, starting a new chapter filled with both opportunities and challenges. To ease their transition, @birdsforsofia provided $4,500 in rent assistance, ensuring they had a safe home for a kid with special needs. Thanks to the generosity of our partners Four Hands and Malouf, their apartment was also furnished with $23,000 worth of essential items, turning an empty space into a warm, comfortable place for Daryna to thrive.
Every 2 weeks, Daryna undergoes medical check-ups, where doctors carefully monitor her progress. Recently, she was able to stop taking prednisone, a significant milestone in her recovery. Physiotherapists are amazed by her strength, noting how determined she is to push her limits.
Despite her condition, Daryna is developing like any other child. She feeds herself with a spoon, loves playing with a ball, climbing slides at the playground, and solving puzzles. Though she speaks only a few words, she communicates clearly—leading her parents by the hand to show what she needs. Her playful energy is unstoppable—she dances, runs outside, and collects little treasures along the way.
Daryna’s story is one of resilience, love, and the power of community. Thanks to supporters like you and the reliable shoulders of our partners, she has not just received treatment but also the foundation for a bright and independent future.
